The face of protest Vinesh Phogat is in sight of gold

Vinesh Phogat, who was a leading light of the wrestlers’ protest against the then Wrestling Federation chief, Brij Bhushan Singh,  and was shabbily treated by the authorities last year, is all set to become the first Indian woman wrestler to win a silver or gold medal in the Olympic Games. With this India is all set to get its first medal other than a bronze.

After winning three medals in shooting,India is certain of its fourth medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. It can be a silver or a gold in women’s wrestling. Sakshi became the first Indian woman wrestler to win an Olympic medal during the Rio Games in 2016. Both Sakshi and Vinesh belong to Haryana.

Wrestler Vinesh will take on the American rival Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the final of the 50 kg category. Vinesh and Sarah recorded identical 5-0 wins over their opponents. While Vinesh got the better of Cuban Guzman Lopez Yusneylis, Sarah defeated Mongolian  Otgonjargel Dolgorjav.

Vinesh, who has been in terrific form accounted for World and Olympic champion Yui Sasaki when she launched her campaign this morning. She followed it with a convincing win over her Ukraine rival, Oksana Livach.

Continuing with the same verve and form, she faced no difficulty in overcoming the challenge of Cuban Lopez Guzman.

Sarah was equally impressive in her 5-0 win over the Mongolian rival.

Both Vinesh and Sarah wanted to floor their opponents for outright wins by fall but their opponents held on fighting against their superior rivals.
